On July 4, 1776, 56 men gathered and voted to approve the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration proclaimed that the Thirteen Colonies were now free and independent States.
Of the 56 men that signed that document, 25 of them were lawyers, and of course the freedom was secured through the sacrifices of all those who fought. However, the Declaration of Independence expressed the ideals of liberty, democracy, and the determination to fight for self-governance.
The drafting of the Declaration of Independence was entrusted to a Committee of Five, of which four were lawyers: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. Thomas Jefferson, known for his eloquent writing style, was chosen as the principal draftsman. Benjamin Franklin was the fifth member of the committee and the only non-lawyer.
While many people do not think of lawyers on this holiday, it is interesting to wonder if we would be here today without the work of the lawyers of the Revolution. In short, lawyers were not just legal professionals but were instrumental in shaping the political and intellectual landscape of the American Revolution, including the creation of the our Declaration of Independence.
So as we prepare for the coming holiday, which typically is celebrated with BBQs, fireworks, and time spent with family and friends, think about what this day really means to you and our nation.
It may not seem that significant but though our legal representation and advocacy we are the principles set out by the Founding Fathers related to individual rights within the American legal system. We continue to focus on fighting for justice and fairness, by advocating for each and every client.
